Robert Guei was a military officer and politician from Ivory Coast. He was born on March 16, 1941, in Kabakouma, Ivory Coast. Guei served as the head of the Armed Forces of Ivory Coast from 1999 to 2000, during which he staged a coup and took control of the government. He declared himself president, suspended the constitution, and dissolved the National Assembly. He was in power for 11 months before he was overthrown in another coup.
During his time in power, Guei implemented economic and political reforms and attempted to tackle corruption in the government. He also organized a presidential election, in which he was a candidate, but he lost to Laurent Gbagbo in a controversial vote.
After his ousting, Guei fled the country but returned in 2002 and attempted to stage a comeback. However, he was arrested and killed during the Ivorian civil war in September 2002.
